Certified Tommy Atkins Mango Seedlings From Invetta Model Farm
Certified Tommy Atkins from Invetta Model Farm
Our Secret: The “Tree Branch Rooting” Method
Unlike traditional nurseries that rely solely on seeds, Invetta Model Farm uses the advanced Tree Branch Rooting (also known as Air Layering or Marcotting) technique. This method allows us to grow a new, independent tree directly from the branch of a mature, high-performing Tommy Atkins “mother” tree.
Are you looking for a high-yield, scientifically proven investment for your farm? At Invetta Model Farm in Kaliiro, Kalungu, we aren’t just selling seedlings; we are providing the future of commercial mango farming in Uganda.
Why Certified Tommy Atkins? The Science-Backed Choice
In 2023, Dr Otim Alfred (Kawanda Research Centre) conducted an extensive feasibility study at our farm. The verdict was clear: while other varieties like Kent or Van Dyke are popular, the Tommy Atkins variety is the most compatible with Kalungu District’s specific soil profile.
Following this expert advice, we took the bold step of top-grafting our entire orchard. Today, Invetta Model Farm stands as a specialist hub, dedicated to the variety that thrives best in our local environment.
How it Works:
- Selection: We choose a healthy, fruit-bearing branch.
- Wounding: A small ring of bark is removed to encourage hormone buildup.
- Rooting Medium: The wound is wrapped in a nutrient-rich moist medium (like peat moss or coco peat).
- Sealing: It is wrapped in plastic to retain moisture.
- Separation: Once a robust root system develops within the wrap, the branch is cut and potted.
The Advantages of Branch-Rooted Seedlings:
- Genetic Precision: The seedling is a 100% genetic clone of the mother tree, ensuring the exact same fruit quality and size.
- Faster Fruiting: Because the “seedling” is physiologically mature, it can begin fruiting in 2–3 years, compared to 5–7 years for seed-grown trees.
- True-to-Type: No surprises. You get the exact fiber-free, vibrant, and hardy Tommy Atkins mango you expect.
- Hardiness: These trees are naturally more resistant to the specific soil-borne challenges of the Kalungu region.
